Decision research consistently shows that beyond a certain point, additional choice and additional information do not improve decisions — they degrade them. A patient facing surgery is already carrying a heavy cognitive load: fear, uncertainty, and the weight of an irreversible decision. Adding technical complexity on top of that load rarely helps.

A well-designed decision environment does the opposite of what most clinics do. Instead of presenting everything, it presents the right things, in the right order, in language the patient can hold onto. It reduces options to a manageable set, translates trade-offs into lived terms, and gives the patient the confidence to choose — not because they were persuaded, but because they genuinely understand.
